Shield & Shine Fire Cider

from $13.00

Grief is not just an emotional experience; it's a physical one. The days, weeks, and months after losing a pet can leave your immune system depleted, your digestion sluggish, and your body running on empty while your heart tries to catch up. Shield & Shine was made for that window. A handcrafted organic fire cider that helps your constitution hold its ground when grief has left you vulnerable.

This is the bolder, more stimulating counterpart to gentle grief support. Ginger, garlic, horseradish, hot peppers, astragalus, and burdock — warming, dispersing, deeply nourishing herbs that move stagnation, stimulate circulation, and shore up immune defenses when you need it most. It won't rush your grief. But it will help your body stay standing while you move through it.

You'll notice this fire cider has no honey & that's intentional. It's vegan-friendly and accessible for folks with bee allergies. Add your own local honey or maple syrup if you like a softer edge.

How to use:

  • Preventive / daily: 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon per day (many herbalists recommend 1 tsp daily as a maintenance tonic).

  • At the first sign of a cold or to warm up: 1 tbsp diluted in a cup of warm water or honey-lemon tea, up to 2–3 times daily. (Vinegar is strong — dilute.)

My favorite way to take my fire cider is to put about 1 tablespoon into a shot glass with some local honey and a little bit of warm water, mix, and knock ‘em back. Though I also enjoy it in sparkling water as a savory mocktail, or added into warm broths.

However, feel free to take a spoonful, mix into tea, or drizzle on savory dishes for a boost of warmth and vitality. Get creative with it!

Included herbs & Ingredients:

Onion & garlic – pungent, warming, immune-supportive, clear stagnation. Among the most trusted allies in traditional herbalism for clearing stagnation and defending the body.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) – hot and stimulating. Moves circulation, warms the core, supports digestion — which grief frequently disrupts.

Horseradish root(Armoracia rusticana) – sharp and dispersing. Clears mucus, opens the sinuses, moves what's stuck.

Hot peppers (varying WNC strains) – fiery, stimulating, increase circulation and warmth.

Lemon – bright, cooling edge, cuts heaviness, supports digestion.

Burdock(Arctium lappa) – earthy, grounding, alterative; balances heat with nourishment.

Astragalus(Astragalus membranaceus)– sweet and tonifying. One of the most well-researched herbs for immune tone, traditionally used to strengthen the body's defensive energy over time. Note: if you are on biologics or immunosuppressants, please reach out before ordering — I'm happy to make a custom blend without astragalus.

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) – pungent, warming, enhances absorption of other herbs.

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) – aromatic and clarifying. Supports circulation and lifts the fog that grief and illness both bring.

Why Fire Cider for Grief?

Fire cider is one of my favorite ways to incorporate warmth into colder months for clients and friends alike. It not only aids in digestion, but also helps ward off incoming colds and viral sickies. By choosing this spicy tonic, you can increase skin blood flow and produce a local warming sensation (helpful for peripheral circulation / perceived warmth).

Overall, my formula is yang / warming / pungent — it moves stagnation, stimulates circulation, and opens the sinuses. The pungent roots and peppers are considered to move qi and blood and to warm the core. Burdock and astragalus temper that heat: burdock as a gentle alterative/cleansing root, astragalus as a nutritive/tonic. This makes the blend suitable for winter warming, circulation, and mucus mobilization in herbal energetics (think: stimulate circulation, dry dampness, open nasal passages).

I chose to add one of my favorite herbal allies when it comes to immunity, astragalus, which has immunomodulatory evidence (in vitro, animal, and some clinical contexts) and is traditionally used as a tonic for “defensive qi”.
