Roots & Stars Oxymel

from $16.00

Grief doesn't keep business hours. It comes at 2 AM, it comes in the car, it comes in the chest-tightening wave you weren't expecting on a Tuesday afternoon. Underneath most grief, especially the grief of losing a pet, there's an anxious, dysregulated nervous system trying to make sense of an absence it keeps reaching for.

Roots & Stars was blended to help soothe frayed systems. Kava, motherwort, passionflower, rose, and peppermint, with the option of organically grown CBD, in a traditional oxymel base of raw local WNC honey and apple cider vinegar.

This is herbal support for the nervous system in grief: calming without sedating, grounding without numbing, sweet enough to actually look forward to.

How to use:

  • Daily support: Take 1 teaspoon–1 tablespoon per day as a grounding tonic.

  • For stress or overwhelm: 2 tablespoons in still or sparkling water, or stirred into warm tea for a calming ritual.

  • Creative uses: Sip straight, add to a mocktail for a botanical twist, or drizzle over fresh fruit for a sweet-tart herbal glaze.

My favorite way to enjoy Roots & Stars is with some bubbly water at the end of the day; it sets the tone for stillness and leaves me with clarity the following morning. But you can also mix it into herbal tea, add it to salad dressings, or take it as a sweet spoonful whenever your heart and spirit need support.

Included Herbs & Ingredients:

Kava root (Piper methysticum) – My personal most trusted herb for anxiety and nervous system tension. Kava eases muscle tightness, quiets anxious thought loops, and supports a calm, embodied presence; all without dulling awareness. A deeply grounding ally for acute grief overwhelm.

CBD flower (Cannabis sativa x Pink Panther strain — optional)– Soothing and balancing. Supports relaxation and ease for those who want an additional layer of nervous system support.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) – The herb of the emotional heart. Motherwort has long been used to ease grief, stabilize the nervous system, and offer steadiness during transition. Its name says it: it mothers you.

Rose (Rosa centifolia) – Gentle, heart-opening, and cooling. Rose softens stress, opens the emotional body, and has centuries of use in grief work and mourning across traditions. It’s one of my favorite herbs to call on for grief.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) – Quietly profound for anxiety and sleeplessness. Passionflower calms the racing mind, eases the body toward rest, and takes the edge off the kind of anxious vigilance that grief creates.

Peppermint(Mentha piperita) – cooling, refreshing, clears heaviness, aids digestion.

Apple cider vinegar – tangy, cleansing, supports digestion and nutrient absorption. Traditional base for oxymels.

Local honey – harmonizing, nourishing, adds sweetness and balances the blend.

Why This Oxymel for Grief?

Roots & Stars is one of my favorite ways to help folks find calm, grounding, and balance in the midst of busy or stressful seasons. It’s designed as a gentle daily tonic to ease stress, support rest, and bring a sense of steadiness to body and spirit.

Overall, my formula is cooling / relaxing / harmonizing — it helps calm the nervous system, soften tension, and restore flow where there’s overstimulation or scattered energy.

I chose to include kava, one of my favorite allies for stress and nervous system regulation. Traditionally used for relaxation, it helps ease muscle tension and supports a calm, embodied presence. Motherwort was also an intentional choice; it’s a wonderful herb for tending the emotional heart, easing cycles of stress, and offering steadiness during transition.

As with any herbal support, Roots & Stars is not one-size-fits-all. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications that affect the liver or nervous system, ask your healthcare professional if this blend is right for you. I’m always happy to discuss custom blends for those with sensitivities or contraindications.

Also in the shop: When your nervous system settles, your heart needs tending next. Steady & Strong is a grief-focused herbal tea with hawthorn, rose, and nettle. Think of this blend as an embodiment for emotional steadiness and the long work of healing. [ Feel Steady & Strong]
