Incantation for pets nearing their goodbye

Losing a pet can be one of the most tender and heartbreaking experiences we go through. When the day comes, you might find that words feel far away, even when your feelings are loud. In moments like this, thoughtful words and sayings of kindness can offer something steady. They can help you feel seen, held, and reminded that you are not alone in the shape of your grief.

Pet loss can also stir up doubt. You might wonder if you are grieving “too much,” or not in the right way, or not moving through it fast enough. The truth is, there is no wrong way to mourn a love like this. Surrounding yourself with gentle words that reflect what you are carrying can be a quiet kind of support as you move through the days ahead.

One of the beautiful things about quotes is that you can keep them close. Grief has a way of arriving unexpectedly, in the grocery store aisle, on a familiar walk, in the middle of an ordinary afternoon. A few comforting words on your mirror, your bedside table, or as your phone wallpaper can feel like a soft hand on your shoulder when you need it most.

The journey of pet loss often comes in waves. In the beginning, you may be trying to understand how the world can keep turning without their physical presence beside you. Over time, you begin learning how to live around the missing, how to carry the love forward, and how to let your grief change shape without letting it erase what you shared.

Below, you’ll find an incantation, a prayer, some words of affirmation for your pet nearing their transition to the other side. I believe they’re all similar in action, but go by different names. This prayer is deeply spiritual, but not religious. You can choose one image that feels the best, or say them one after the other to create a sacred space around you and your pet.

If you need something less visually stimulating, I have the whole prayer written out here. No images, no other text, just words you can repeat out loud to your animal companion or quietly to yourself.

I pause at this sacred threshold.

I invite the wisdom of grief, transition, and love to fill the room.

I promise to speak these words from love, and not fear.

I embody courage, as this sacred process takes place.

I honor your body, mind, and soul throughout this entire process.

Oh my beloved, how I love you so

There are a few things I want you to know:

Your transition is nearing, and while you might see your guardian crying in pain,

Please know that these tears are not in vain.

May I be present during this process and not shy from the discomfort

May I hold space for you to move through your final days with compassion

May all of my actions be to dedicated to help you during this sacred transition

May I stay grounded during times of difficult decisions,

— and remeber to always cherish our love.

Do not be scared, my darling one.

I will not rush this process.

I will not command the outcome.

I will not be selfish on this sacred pathway.

I am offering you respect, dignity, and grace in this journey.

I vow to ensure this voyage is safe, compassionate, and beautiful.

May this journey be filled with love, transcendence, and honor.

May your expedition to spirit be brilliant,

— without pain, scarcity, or discomfort.

May you take solace knowing I will be by your side through this walkway.

I vow to keep my promise, and love you this whole time.

Do not be scared, my darling one.

May you be bathed in love.

May you have the courage you need to embark on this new trek.

May you settle into softness, and remain whole within this process.

May you know that you are allowed to work in your own way,

and in your own time.

Do not be scared, my darling one.

I offer you steadiness, respect, and trust

I offer companionship throughout your transition.

I offer you a space to land.

I will honor your timing, and will help you walk forward when the time is right.
